IPE is a common name for a group of 30 species of trees, known in Latin America by the common names Poui, Pau D'arco, or Ipê. The latter sometimes appears as epay or simply ipe. The large timber species are sometimes called Lapacho or Guayacan, but these names are more properly applied to the species Handroanthus Lapacho and Handroanthus Guayacan, respectively.
Ipe (pronounced ee-pay) also known as Brazilian walnut or Lapacho is one of the densest hardwoods available, with the same fire rating as concrete and steel. It is mildew and decay resistant, and is not deteriorated by insects, making it perfect for outdoor and seaside construction.
